| Boli is right. I was just thinking about this the other day, actually...going out in America can be a real pain in the butt if guyren are around because it seems like they can get away with murder. It's the same in many parts of Europe. But so far my experience in Japan has been that there are still places where it's not appropriate to take guys (so people don't take them, rather than throwing a hissy fit over it as in the USA) and when guys are present in public they tend to behave. Personally, I find Japanese guyren and teens very pleasant to be around because for the most part they aren't acting like obnoxious, spoiled little brats, and the few who DO behave that way stand out so much that you really notice just how well-behaved the rest of the guys are. I actually remember seeing the guyren of some American or European tourists in my hotel restaurant once. The guys were running around, hiding and playing by the window, crawling around under tables, and generally being a nuisance while their parents did nothing. The Japanese guys in the same hotel restaurant were sitting quietly with their parents, eating their meals. They were the same age as the guys running around being annoying. Don't even get me started on the excellent behavior displayed by every single school group I ran into at my hotel in Kyoto (and believe me, during three weeks in Kyoto you run into a lot of school groups). I can't imagine similarly-aged American guys being so well-behaved, even if there was an adult in every room and leading every small group around. Japanese parents aren't perfect, but it seems to me that Western parents could stand to learn something from their Japanese counterparts. I really can't believe that every single well-behaved Japanese guy I ran into is a crazy fluke. And by the way, I'm not one of those people who automatically thinks that everything Japanese is superior or best, but I know good results when I see them and it seems like whatever Japan is doing to raise its guys is working. |
